QUILTS OF VALOR

In June Susan Gordon from Quilts of Valor Foundation will be coming to our guild for a presentation.  That evening for each 10th Anniversary QOV block turned in, members will receive a door prize ticket.  Make as many as you would like to boost your chance for some wonderful prizes.

I hope you all will be busy making blocks over the next few weeks where Susan will leave with lots of blocks. Below are the directions.  If you prefer to have a printed version, refer to the email that went out on March 8.  A PDF was attached to this email from Renee or you can go to www.qovf.org and download one.  It is under the "Free Pattern" section.  Click the words "read more"  and the download will be there.

If you have any questions or problems downloading the instructions contact Renee or Sarah.

Quilts of Valor 10th Anniversary Block
Cutting and Assembly Directions
Cut (4) 2 ½" Blue Squares
Cut (2) 3" Blue Squares
Cut (2) 3" Red Squares
Cut (4) 2 ½" x 4 ½" White Rectangles

To assemble use ¼" seams throughout; start by drawing a diagonal line on the back of the red squares. Place the red and blue squares right sides together and stitch ¼" inch on either side of line. Cut on line. Press open. Do this to both squares. Square to 2 ½". Sew the red and blue HST to the 2 ½" square and press towards the blue. Sew this unit to a White Rectangle and press to the White.

After assembling four of these units as per picture assemble using block picture above. Your unfinished block will be 8 ½". Please do not square your block. It should not look like the picture above as the picture is generated and shows no seam allowances.
Guidelines for 10th Anniversary Block 1. All blocks must be Red, White/Cream and Blue. (You may use any color way.)

3. Do not trim your blocks.
4. Unfinished blocks should be no smaller than 8 ½ "square
5. Blocks received by July 1 will be distributed at the National Leadership conference.

Bonnie Hunter Workshops

For all of you that have been patiently waiting for details about the Bonnie Hunter workshops scheduled in February 2013, we now have the information.  Bonnie has so many wonderful quilts, it has been difficult to narrow down the choices.  After discussing options with Jackie and Barbara, it was decided to offer one from her older series and one from her newest book just released-String Fling.  Starting time and additional information will be forthcoming as it gets closer.

Sign-up begins Monday evening at our October meeting.  If you are a guild member, each workshop fee is $45.00. Payment is due at the time of sign-up. For non-members requesting to take the workshop we will begin a waiting list and in the event we do not fill these workshops you will be contacted.  Non-member fee is $55.00 and will not be due until the time a spot becomes available.  After February 1, 2013 we will not be able to refund any paid fees but will try to find someone to take your spot and put you in touch with them.

September's Twilight Pumpkin Patch Placemat

September's meeting will be a hands-on project where you can let your creativity flow.  The guild will be furnishing the foundation to make one placemat.  If you enjoy the process and want to make more, supply information will be available at the meeting.

What to bring:

Lots of 2 inch squares!
  • Approximately 75 two inch squares in a variety of blues
  • Approximately 50 two inch squares in a variety of oranges, golds, yellows, and rust
  • Two or three green two inch squares for the stems
  • A Clover Mini Iron or other LOW voltage iron
  • A few pins for the diagonal pieces that will be sewn at home
  • A large ironing surface or piece of Warm & Natural batting (25 x 17). Bring a larger piece if you have it available so it will cover your entire table and help out your quilting friends.
  • Extension cord for your iron
If you can, bring a few extra squares of your colors to place in a basket in case we have visitors.  We want them to enjoy our meeting and be able to participate.  This will also help if you do not have enough variety.  Put one in...take one out!

This project will be completed at home.  No sewing machines needed at the meeting.

If you have any questions, contact Sarah at sarah6599@bellsouth.net

See you in September!
